The study "Comparing the Effectiveness of Pre-filled Saline Flush Syringes in Maintaining Clinical Vascular Access" was conducted by Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc, BS.CKII, based on international clinical evidence and Vietnam Ministry of Health guidelines, to comprehensively compare single-use pre-filled saline flush syringes with the traditional manual preparation method (saline bottle, syringe, and separate needle).
Objective
To provide scientific evidence from randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, and practice guidelines from leading global health authorities, including the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Infusion Nurses Society, and the Vietnam Ministry of Health.
Methods
A review and synthesis of multicenter clinical data and randomized trials published between 2013 and 2025 (including studies by Ceylan, Saliba, and Benhamou), focusing on four criteria: infection rate, catheter failure rate, procedure time, and healthcare economic efficiency.
Results
Convenience
The time required to perform a line-flush procedure dropped sharply from 86 seconds to just 35.2 seconds per procedure. Being ready to use immediately, the pre-filled syringe eliminates the steps of drawing solution from a multi-dose bottle and assembling a separate needle and syringe, allowing nursing staff to work faster and more consistently across shifts.

The findings show that pre-filled saline flush syringes reduce the rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection by up to 77% compared with manual preparation, and reduce the rate of subcutaneous port-related bloodstream infection nearly 2.5-fold, from 6.3% down to 2.7%. The needle-free design of the product also completely eliminates the risk of needlestick injury to healthcare workers. A multicenter study of 3,853 catheters recorded a reduction in catheter failure rate from 57% to 43.4%. Regarding adherence to aseptic non-touch technique, the manual-preparation group breached this principle in as many as 72.3% of procedures, while the group using pre-filled syringes maintained significantly stricter control over procedural errors.
Manual preparation results in solution waste, including medications such as atropine and epinephrine, of 57% to 86%, while the waste rate with pre-filled syringes is 0%. Health-economic analysis shows that switching to pre-filled syringes saves healthcare systems millions of US dollars by reducing medication errors and lowering the cost of treating catheter-related infection complications.
Productivity
The use of pre-filled syringes reduces nursing resources spent on solution preparation and syringe management by up to 85%, allowing staff to focus more on direct patient care.
Conclusion
Single-use pre-filled saline flush syringes deliver comprehensive benefits across all four areas of safety, convenience, economic efficiency, and productivity.
