Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc, MD, Specialist Level II

The article "Why Should Healthcare Facilities Adopt Safety IV Catheters Today?" by Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc, MD, Specialist Level II summarizes recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), along with evidence from numerous scientific studies to evaluate the effectiveness of Safety-Engineered Devices (SEDs) in clinical practice. The review focuses on the role of safety IV catheters in reducing needlestick injuries, enhancing occupational safety for healthcare workers, and improving the economic efficiency of healthcare facilities.
Abstract
Objective
To evaluate the role of safety IV catheters in preventing Needlestick Injuries (NSIs) while analyzing their clinical and economic benefits, as well as international recommendations for their adoption in healthcare facilities.
Methods
The study reviews guidelines issued by the WHO, CDC, OSHA, the European Union, and the Vietnamese Ministry of Health, together with systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and health economic models related to the use of safety IV catheters.
Results
Peripheral intravenous catheters are among the most commonly used medical devices in clinical practice, with more than one billion catheter insertions performed worldwide each year. However, conventional IV catheters remain a major source of needlestick injuries, increasing the risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as HIV, HBV, and HCV.
Research has shown that safety IV catheters can reduce the risk of Needlestick Injuries (NSIs) by 50–74%, while some implementation programs have reported reductions of up to 80% following the complete replacement of conventional devices. In addition, a study conducted across the Liguria Hospital Network in Italy found that the risk of NSIs associated with conventional IV catheters was 25 times higher than that associated with safety IV catheters.
Beyond occupational safety, health economic analyses indicate that investing in safety IV catheters can significantly reduce the costs associated with NSI management, with estimated annual savings of approximately VND 288 million for a 500-bed hospital.
Conclusion
Safety IV catheters have been proven to be an effective solution for reducing occupational risks, improving the quality of patient care, and optimizing healthcare operating costs. Their adoption has become a recommended practice endorsed by many international healthcare organizations for modern intravenous therapy.

2.1. Advancing Safer Intravenous Therapy
Research evidence demonstrates that the adoption of Safety IV Catheters not only reduces the risk of needlestick injuries but also improves patient care while optimizing operational efficiency in healthcare facilities. This approach has been widely recommended by international organizations such as the WHO, CDC, and OSHA as a best practice in modern clinical settings.
In Vietnam, WEMBLEY MEDICAL is a pioneer in the research, design, and manufacturing of the MEDCATH Safety IV Catheter, produced on advanced manufacturing lines supplied by Kahle (Italy)—a global provider of production equipment for many of the world's leading medical device companies. MEDCATH is designed to facilitate safe intravenous infusion and medication delivery while protecting healthcare professionals, minimizing vascular trauma, and improving treatment efficiency.
2.2. Designed for Safety and Clinical Performance
Developed with a strong focus on enhancing intravenous safety, MEDCATH integrates multiple technical features that support clinical performance while improving both healthcare professionals' workflow and patient experience.

The innovative safety cap automatically activates upon needle withdrawal, providing an immediate barrier to prevent needlestick injuries and minimize cross-contamination risks for patients and medical staff.
The needle tip is designed with special geometry, featuring a reverse cut and silicone coating to ensure easy insertion of the catheter into the vein, minimizing pain, and vein trauma for patients.
The injection port cap has an automatic folding mechanism and is color-coded according to international standards.
The FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene) catheter ensures a stable flow, and resistance to kinking, and prevents tube twisting.
The occlusion chamber utilizes a hydrophobic PTFE membrane to prevent blood overflow.
2.3. Manufactured to International Standards
Product quality is ensured through an automated manufacturing process in an ISO Class 100,000 cleanroom, combined with Ethylene Oxide (EO) sterilization in accordance with ISO 11135, ensuring sterility and product integrity before use.
MEDCATH Safety IV Catheter is manufactured under a comprehensive quality management system compliant with international standards, including ISO 13485:2016, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 10555-1:2013, ISO 10555-5:2013, ISO 80369-7:2021, ISO 9626:2016, GMP, and CE certification, meeting stringent requirements for the quality and safety of intravenous medical devices.
With its integrated safety features, internationally standardized manufacturing process, and rigorous quality control system, MEDCATH Safety IV Catheter provides healthcare facilities with a reliable solution for improving intravenous therapy, protecting healthcare professionals, enhancing patient experience, and supporting a safer, more sustainable clinical environment.

MEDCATH Safety IV Catheters features an optimized design, incorporating a 3-beveled needle to minimize puncture force through the skin. Crafted from flexible, durable material, the catheter boasts a smooth taper, kink resistance, and non-irritating properties. Its wings, designed akin to butterfly wings, facilitate secure catheter fixation, while the flashback chamber integrates an hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filter.
The safety shield features of the self-activating MEDCATH Safety IV Catheters eliminate the need for additional user manipulation, thereby preventing potential needle stick injuries and associated infections.
