The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the global risk posed by the monkeypox outbreak as moderate, with concerns raised about undetected cases in the community.
According to a WHO statement, which CNN reported on May 30th, the monkeypox outbreak currently poses a moderate risk to global public health.
As of May 26th, 23 countries had reported a total of 257 confirmed cases and approximately 120 suspected cases under investigation since the first case was discovered in the United Kingdom on May 7th. The number of cases has risen dramatically in this unprecedented outbreak.
The majority of the reported cases are in Europe and North America, with the United States recording 12 cases as of May 27th.
"WHO assesses the risk at the global level as moderate considering this is the first time that many monkeypox cases and clusters are reported concurrently in non-endemic and endemic countries in widely disparate WHO geographical areas," according to the organization .
